Hi, hey, hello!
I like many others recently watched Avatar: The Last Airbender when it first premiered on Netflix and now we have The Legend of Korra!!. I loved the show and was completely astonished to learn that there were graphic novels following the events of the series. Thank you to Adri @PerpetualPages and Leelynn @SometimesLeelynnReads for taking the time and screaming at me to read them! So as soon as I learned I requested it through Libby and waited.
There was a lot of gushing going on because I was seeing those characters once again, so count this as a warning for the thoughts ahead! Also, if you haven’t watched the Tv show you may not want to read ahead because spoilers.
1. Omg Katara and Aang calling each other “sweetie”!
I love that we get to see them beyond friendship. The series ended with them deciding to gibe their romantic relationship a try and I thought it was super cute how it came about in the graphic novel. I did not get the oogies as Sokka mentions.
2. There’s a side story!
All of these will probably include exclamation marks lol. Anyhow, I loved how there was a side story with Top and her metalbending school. Having one felt as if I was watching one of the episodes. I think this was a clever format to follow and bring to the graphic novel.
3. Discussing colonialism
I lied no exclamation point for all of them. This story deals with the Fire nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom. I wasn’t expecting the story to follow that path, but I’m glad it did. When I was watching the show I wondered what would happen to them and how it would be handled. It’s a messy issue, one in which the Fire Nation needs to address their past head on.
4. Poor Baby Zuko!
I feel like whenever there is an interaction with Zuko and his father I find myself saying this. I just loving so much and feel so bad about how he was treated by his father. There were some instances in the graphic novel where I would say it and be mad at Ozai, why are you so mean??
5. Yay, learning more about metal benders!!
As I mentioned before, the side story follows Toph at the beginnings of her metal bending school. The origin story as you will. I found the discussion of feelings being tied to bending fascinating. Also, the bender’s in the school are hilarious.
6. Sokka the motivational bender!
It wouldn’t be ATLA without Sokka and his antics. I liked that he stays with Toph and they explore how to motivate the students to learn metal bending. Does it work out??
7. How did this take such a turn?
I didn’t want what happened to happen. I’m sad that it took the turn it did, but I can’t act like I didn’t see it coming. Zuko just needs to sleep it off and Suki is amazing.
8. What?
That was me at the ending! What a cliffhanger. I requested the second volume FAST and need to know what happens.
That was a very different posts than the ones I’ve done before. I wanted this to be more casual and fun, you know to match the graphic novel (even though it discussed some serious topics). Anyway, I had fun writing this and hope to keep doing creative posts like this.
